Minamikyushu Map Poster & Print
Minamikyushu is a city at the southern end of Kyushu in Kagoshima Prefecture, formed in 2007 from the merger of the towns of Kawanabe, Chiran and Ei. It covers a wide area of the Satsuma Peninsula, from inland hills to the coast of the East China Sea, so on a map it looks less like one town than a group of settlements linked by country roads.
Chiran is the best-known part. It has a preserved samurai residence district with stone walls and hedged gardens, and the Chiran Peace Museum, which remembers the kamikaze pilots who flew from an airfield here in World War II. The surrounding uplands are covered in tea fields, and Chiran tea is well known across Japan.
A Minamikyushu map poster brings together tea country, small towns and a stretch of coastline. In black and white, the roads curving through the hills and the fine grid of the old samurai lanes form a quiet, detailed picture of a rural corner of Japan.

Tea uplands
Tea fields cover the plateaus and slopes, where farm roads follow the rows and the contours of the land.
East China Sea coast
The southern edge of the city meets the sea along a coastline of bays and headlands, giving the map a strong line of water.
