Polatlı lies west of Ankara, on the broad, fairly flat plateau of central Anatolia. On the map it is a compact town set in open land. A railway and main roads run through it, and rural roads and field boundaries spread in every direction. The Sakarya River winds through the countryside to the west.
The land around Polatlı has deep historical layers. The area saw the Battle of the Sakarya in 1921, a turning point in the Turkish War of Independence. Nearby is Gordion, the ancient capital of Phrygia, where large burial mounds, including the one associated with King Midas, still rise from the plain.
