Poonamalle sits on the western edge of the Chennai metropolitan area, where the city begins to spread along the main highway toward Bengaluru. On a map the highway is the defining line, running east to west through the town. An older core of narrow, irregular streets clusters beside it, and newer residential layouts fill the land on either side.
The town has long been a stop on the road inland from the coast, and it has grown quickly as Chennai has expanded outward. The surrounding land is flat and dotted with lakes and water tanks, including reservoirs that supply the city. A new metro line is also being built to link Poonamalle with central Chennai, a sign of how closely it is now tied to the wider city.

Old town streets
