Saidpur is in Nilphamari District in Rangpur Division, on the flat plains of northern Bangladesh. The town is closely tied to the railway. The Saidpur Railway Workshop, set up in the colonial period in the late nineteenth century, is widely regarded as the largest railway workshop in the country, and the town grew around it.
On a map the railway is the defining feature. Tracks and sidings cut through the town, the workshop grounds cover a large, orderly block, and the older quarters built for railway staff have a more regular layout than the lanes around them. Saidpur is also home to a large Urdu-speaking community, many of whose families came to work on the railway.
