Stargard sits on the Ina River in West Pomerania, east of Szczecin. Its old town is still recognisable on a map as a compact oval once enclosed by medieval walls. Large sections of the fortifications and several towers and gates survive, and a green ring of parks now follows much of the former line of the defences.
The river is part of the old town's design. The Ina passes along its edge, and the Mill Gate, a fortified water gate built across the river, is one of the town's best-known structures. Nearby stands St. Mary's Collegiate Church, a massive example of Baltic brick Gothic that rises above the surrounding roofs.

Ina and Mill Gate
The Ina River runs along the old town, and the fortified Mill Gate spans it. On the map, the point where wall meets water is especially clear.
Modern districts
Outside the old town, housing estates and industrial areas follow a looser, more open plan. The contrast with the tight medieval centre gives the print depth.
