Târgu Mureş sits on the Mureş River in the middle of Transylvania. The river runs along the western side of the city, and from there the streets climb gently east toward wooded hills. The centre is built around one long, tapering square, Piața Trandafirilor, the Square of Roses. It gives the map an unusual elongated spine instead of a single compact plaza.
At one end stands the Palace of Culture, an early twentieth-century building with coloured tiled roofs and a stained-glass hall, and the Orthodox cathedral faces it from further along. Nearby, the medieval citadel keeps its walls and bastions inside a green enclosure. Romanian and Hungarian communities both live here, and street signs and cultural life reflect both.
