Umeki is in Kagoshima Prefecture, at the southern end of Kyushu. It lies on the western side of the Satsuma Peninsula, where the land slopes down toward the East China Sea. On a map the town does not show one dense grid. Clusters of streets sit in the lower ground, and roads follow the valleys between wooded hills.
This landscape suits a minimalist print. Built-up areas appear as tight patches of fine lines, and farmland and forest appear as open space between them. Rivers and streams run down toward the coast, and the main roads bend to follow them rather than cutting straight across. Toward the sea
The western side of the Satsuma Peninsula falls toward the East China Sea, and the streams and roads on the map tend to follow that slope toward the coast.
