Valabhīpur is a small town in Bhavnagar district, on the eastern side of the Saurashtra peninsula in Gujarat. The land here is flat and open, so the town itself defines the map: a dense centre of lanes and closely packed buildings, roads leading out in several directions, and a wide expanse of farmland beyond, crossed by seasonal watercourses.
Beneath the present town lies ancient Valabhi, capital of the Maitraka dynasty from roughly the fifth to the eighth century. It was a notable centre of learning, with Buddhist monasteries that drew students from far away, and Jain tradition remembers it as the place where a council set down the Jain scriptures in writing.
