Wake Forest lies in northern Wake County, North Carolina, just north of Raleigh. Its historic core is a small grid of streets around the old college campus, with the main street running alongside the railroad. Around this compact center, newer neighborhoods spread out in curving roads and cul-de-sacs across the rolling Piedmont land between creeks and woodland.
The town is best known as the original home of Wake Forest College, founded in 1834. The college moved to Winston-Salem in the 1950s but kept the name. Its former campus is now used by Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. The historic district around it preserves many of the older houses and tree-lined streets that define the center.
To the west, Falls Lake stretches across the landscape with long, branching arms that reach into the surrounding forest. The reservoir's branching arms reach toward the town from the west. Their irregular shapes of water contrast with the neat street patterns nearby.
Railroad main street
The main commercial street runs parallel to the rail line through the old town. This straight axis connects the historic center to the rest of the map.
