Yegor’yevsk lies in the south-eastern part of Moscow Oblast, in the Meshchera lowlands, among forests and small rivers. On a map, the town has a clear shape. A compact central grid with a large central square is surrounded by lower-density districts, and roads lead out toward Moscow, Kolomna and the villages around it. Former industrial sites form larger blocks near the edges of the centre.
The town takes its name from Saint George, Yegor in Russian, and grew into an important textile centre in the nineteenth century. Its most recognisable landmark is the Cathedral of Alexander Nevsky, a large church in the town centre whose silhouette dominates Yegor’yevsk. The merchant buildings nearby still reflect the prosperity of the textile era.
