Railway axis
The line from Orenburg to Tashkent runs straight through the town, and nearly every street follows its direction. The result is a disciplined, linear grid.

Zhosaly Map Poster & Print
Zhosaly, formerly written Dzhusaly, is a town in Kazakhstan's Kyzylorda region and the centre of Karmakshy district. It stands on the old railway line between Orenburg and Tashkent, in the lower Syr Darya valley. Around it lies the flat, dry steppe of southern Kazakhstan, and the Baikonur Cosmodrome is not far to the west.
From above, the railway sets the direction of the whole town. Streets run parallel and perpendicular to the tracks, making a regular grid of long blocks. Beyond it, irrigation channels and the braided course of the Syr Darya break up the open ground.
A Zhosaly map poster suits the town's clear, spare geometry: straight lines of the grid, the long diagonal of the railway, and the loose curves of the river and channels against empty steppe. It is a strong, graphic image of a place defined by distance.

Syr Darya channels
The river and its irrigation channels wind across the lowland near the town. They add fine, meandering lines to an otherwise straight-edged map.
Open steppe
The empty land around Zhosaly is a big part of the composition. The generous white or dark space makes the compact town stand out clearly.
