The historic centre of Bukhara is an intricate knot of narrow lanes, courtyard houses and small squares, with almost no straight line in it. Around it, the twentieth-century city extends in a broad grid of avenues and residential blocks. The contrast is striking from above: an organic core, compact and inward-looking, surrounded by the orderly plan of a much newer city.
Bukhara was one of the great cities of the Silk Road, and its old centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Kalyan Minaret, built in 1127, still rises beside its mosque and the Mir-i Arab madrasa. Nearby are the Ark fortress, the covered trading domes and the Lyabi-Hauz, a stone-lined pool framed by madrasas and old mulberry trees.

The massive citadel appears as a distinct block on the western side of the old town, facing the open ground of the Registan square in front of it.
Lyabi-Hauz
A small rectangular pool at the heart of the old town, surrounded by madrasas and a khanaqah, one of the few regular geometric shapes in the centre.
