Brawley sits in California's Imperial Valley, a desert basin below sea level that irrigation from the Colorado River turned into farmland. From above, the town is a compact grid of blocks. A commercial core sits in the middle, and residential streets run in straight lines until they meet the fields. Past that edge the landscape becomes a patchwork of rectangles, each bounded by a road or a ditch and repeated almost to the horizon.
The New River runs past the western side of town. Its winding channel is one of the few curved lines in a place otherwise made of right angles. Canals and smaller laterals follow the edges of the fields and show up on the map as thin parallel strokes. State highways and a rail line link Brawley to the other farm towns in the valley and give the composition a few long connecting lines.
Brawley is known for its agriculture and for the Cattle Call Rodeo, an annual event with a long local following. A Brawley map poster shows the contrast that shapes the place: a small, orderly town surrounded by a large engineered landscape of fields and water channels, all lying on a desert floor lower than the ocean. The river's meandering course west of town cuts through the surrounding grid. It is the most organic line on the map and gives the composition a natural counterweight.
