Sento Sé Map Poster & Print
Sento Sé lies in the north of Bahia, on the shore of the Sobradinho reservoir, one of the largest artificial lakes in the world by surface area. The reservoir was formed on the São Francisco river in the 1970s. On the map the water spreads as a huge, irregular sheet, and the town appears as a small, neat grid on its edge.
The present town is a replacement. The original Sento Sé stood on lower ground by the river and was flooded when the dam was built, so its residents were moved to a new, planned site. That history explains the town's regular layout, very different from the organic growth of older river settlements in the region.
A Sento Sé map poster shows the planned streets, the long shoreline of the reservoir and the open, lightly marked caatinga stretching away inland. The combination of a precise town plan and a vast body of water gives the print an unusual sense of scale and stillness.
