Bourges was the historic capital of the Berry region in central France. It sits on a low rise where the Yèvre and Auron rivers meet. From above, the old town is an oval of narrow, winding streets. Its outline still follows the line of the ancient walls, and later boulevards trace the edge where the ramparts once stood.
The Cathedral of Saint-Étienne dominates the centre. It is a Gothic building of unusual width, with no transept, and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Nearby is the palace of Jacques Cœur, the fifteenth-century merchant and royal financier, one of the finest secular buildings of its time. Each spring, the city hosts the Printemps de Bourges music festival.
Just below the old town lie the Marais de Bourges. These marshes are small garden plots divided by channels and still worked by hand. On a Bourges map poster they appear as a fine mesh of water lines beside the dense medieval core, making the city look quite unlike any other French prefecture.
