Buenaventura is Colombia's main port on the Pacific, and its map is shaped almost entirely by water. The historic centre and the port facilities stand on Cascajal Island, at the edge of a broad bay, while newer districts spread across the mainland to the east. Bridges link the two, and the coastline between them is broken up by estuaries and tidal channels rather than a clean shoreline.
The surrounding region is one of the rainiest in the Americas, and the land around the city is covered with forest and mangroves that appear on the map as a quiet, empty field around the streets. The road inland climbs toward Cali across the Western Cordillera, and on a poster it reads as a single line leaving the coast behind.
A large share of Colombia's sea trade passes through the port, and container yards and docks occupy much of the island's waterfront. The city is also known for the Afro-Colombian culture and music of the Pacific coast. The bay
A wide bay opens to the Pacific west of the city. On the map it becomes a large calm area of empty space that frames the port and gives the composition its balance.
Mangrove edges
Instead of a straight coast, the shoreline breaks into estuaries and inlets lined with mangroves, so the edges of the street network look ragged and organic against the water.
