Charleville-Mézières is the result of a 1966 merger, and the map still shows two distinct centres. Mézières, the older fortified town, sits almost entirely inside a tight meander of the Meuse. Just to the north, Charleville was laid out from 1606 by Charles de Gonzague as a planned town, with streets arranged in a strict grid around a single grand square. The river winds between and around both.
The Place Ducale, at the heart of Charleville, is a large arcaded square with uniform brick and stone facades, often compared to the Place des Vosges in Paris. On the map it forms a crisp rectangle from which the grid extends evenly. Mézières has a more irregular medieval street plan, with traces of ramparts along its river edges.
The poet Arthur Rimbaud was born in Charleville, and the town hosts a major international puppetry festival that has made it a reference point for the art form. Built in the early seventeenth century, Charleville's central square appears as a sharp rectangle at the centre of a regular grid, the clearest trace of the original town plan.
Old Mézières
Enclosed by the river, the older town keeps an irregular street pattern and remains of its fortifications, in contrast with the geometric order of its northern neighbour.
