Dhule lies in the Khandesh region of northern Maharashtra, on the banks of the Panzara River. The river crosses the city and separates the older neighbourhoods from the areas that grew around them. On a map its winding course gives the otherwise flat plain a clear line to orient by. Low hills and farmland surround the urban area on most sides.
The city is an important road junction. Several national highways meet here, including the route linking Mumbai with Agra, and the map shows these roads converging on Dhule from several directions before heading out across the plain.
