Dohad sits in the far east of Gujarat, close to where the state meets Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. A common local explanation of the name is that it comes from two borders meeting here. On the map the town is a compact knot of lanes. Roads leave it in several directions, and the long straight line of the railway runs past its edge.
The railway shapes the plan more than anything else. Dohad is a stop on the main line between Delhi and Mumbai, and the tracks cut a firm diagonal through the drawing. Close to the tracks the streets are irregular and tightly packed. Further out, newer blocks follow a looser, more regular pattern, and the gaps between them open onto farmland and low ground.
Dohad is also known as the birthplace of the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, born here in 1618 while his father's camp passed through the region.
