Eluru stands between the deltas of the Godavari and the Krishna, and water defines the town more than any building. Irrigation canals from both river systems reach the city, and the Tammileru stream passes through it, so the street network is repeatedly interrupted by channels, embankments and bridges. The older town clusters tightly around these crossings, while newer residential areas stretch along the roads beyond.
To the south-east lies Kolleru Lake, one of the largest freshwater lakes in India, a shallow wetland that swells in the monsoon and shelters large numbers of migratory birds. It appears on the map as a broad, irregular expanse that makes the town feel like a peninsula of streets between canals and marsh. Paddy fields fill much of the remaining land, so the edges of Eluru fade into level ground.
