Entebbe occupies a peninsula on the northern shore of Lake Victoria, south of Kampala. On a map the lake dominates everything: the town is a finger of land with water on three sides, fringed by bays, inlets and papyrus edges. Roads follow the high ground along the peninsula, while the long runways of Entebbe International Airport cut a straight, deliberate line near the water.
For much of the colonial period Entebbe was the administrative capital of Uganda, and the State House still stands here. The Entebbe Botanical Gardens, laid out at the end of the nineteenth century, run down toward the lakeshore. The airport is also remembered worldwide for the 1976 hostage rescue operation, an event that made the town's name familiar far beyond East Africa.
