Faruka sits on the flat alluvial plain of central Punjab, in Pakistan's Sargodha region. On a map the town is a small, dense cluster of lanes. Around it spreads a very large, very regular landscape of fields. Irrigation channels and rural roads cross the plain in long straight lines, and the town's streets thicken where those routes meet.
This part of Punjab depends on the canal systems built to water the land between its great rivers, and that shapes the map as much as any street does. Straight watercourses divide the farmland into rectangles, and villages sit along them at intervals. The town centre is closely packed and organic, with narrow streets and bazaar lanes, which makes a clear contrast with the geometry around it.
