Finglas sits on the northern edge of Dublin, where the city's dense street pattern gives way to wide housing estates and playing fields. From above, the old village core shows as a small knot of irregular streets. Around it, the planned crescents, cul-de-sacs and long avenues of the mid-twentieth century spread out, most of them laid down in a few decades of rapid building.
The River Tolka runs along the southern side of the district, and its valley shows on the map as a thin green corridor between built-up blocks. To the north and west, the M50 ring road curves past with its interchanges, and the N2 heads out of the city towards Ashbourne. Together these roads frame the suburb like the edges of a picture.
Finglas is an old place. An early Christian monastery linked to Saint Canice stood here, and the ruins of the medieval church and graveyard still survive near the village centre. A Finglas map poster puts that small medieval nucleus in the middle of the big twentieth-century suburb that grew around it, which makes an unusually layered composition.

Dublin's orbital motorway arcs past the northern and western edges, its looping interchanges drawn in clean, bold strokes that set the suburb against the countryside beyond.
Old village core
Near the ruined church of Saint Canice, a compact cluster of older streets survives. On the map it breaks the rhythm of the surrounding estates with shorter, less regular lines.
