Granadilla de Abona covers a wide slice of southern Tenerife, falling from pine-covered heights to the Atlantic. The historic town stands on the slopes well above the sea, with narrow streets and whitewashed houses around its church and square. From there roads wind down across dry terrain, terraces and ravines to the coastal settlements below.
The coast is where the map gets crowded. El Médano, one of Europe's best-known spots for windsurfing and kitesurfing, spreads around beaches next to Montaña Roja, a red volcanic cone on the shore.
