Gyeongsan lies directly east of Daegu in North Gyeongsang Province, and on a map the two cities almost merge. Dense apartment districts and commercial streets fill the western side, while the eastern and southern parts open into farmland, reservoirs and low mountain ridges. The contrast between the built-up valley floor and the wooded slopes gives the plan sharp edges.
The city has one of the largest concentrations of higher education in the country and is home to Yeungnam University, Daegu University, Daegu Catholic University and other campuses. Each appears on the map as a large block of its own, with internal roads, sports fields and green space. Daegu Metro Line 2 extends into Gyeongsan and ties these campuses to the neighbouring metropolis.
To the north the land climbs toward Palgongsan, where the stone Buddha known as Gatbawi draws pilgrims up a steep trail. The area is also known for jujubes, grown in orchards around the city. Metro to Daegu
Daegu Metro Line 2 runs east across the boundary into Gyeongsan. Its line shows how closely the two urban areas are now joined.
Reservoirs and ridges
Scattered reservoirs and forested ridges surround the built-up area. The road network thins there, leaving irregular white shapes that frame the city and lead north toward Palgongsan.
