Hastings sits on the flat plains of south-central Nebraska, and from above it reads almost entirely as geometry. Streets run on a tight north–south, east–west grid, and the rail corridors running through town are the main thing that breaks up the blocks. Past the last residential streets the pattern carries on in a coarser form, as the square-mile field roads of the surrounding county reach toward every edge of the frame.
The town was founded in the early 1870s where railroad lines met, and it grew into the seat of Adams County. That origin still shows on the map: the densest blocks gather near the tracks, where the old commercial district sits, and neighborhoods spread outward in even layers. Hastings is also where Edwin Perkins developed Kool-Aid in the 1920s, and the town still celebrates it every summer.

The private college, founded in 1882, shows up as its own patch of the map. There the grid loosens into walks, lawns and larger building footprints, surrounded by ordinary residential blocks.
