Ischgl lies in the Paznaun valley in western Tyrol, and its map is shaped entirely by the valley's narrowness. The village follows the Trisanna river and the main valley road, with hotels, chalets and lift stations packed along a thin strip of level ground. Side streets are short and steep, climbing only a little way before the terrain rises too sharply to build on.
The ski area climbs south from the village toward the Swiss border and connects with Samnaun, a duty-free village in Switzerland, forming the cross-border Silvretta Arena. Ischgl is also known for the large open-air concerts held on the mountain at the start and end of the winter season. Beyond the village, the valley continues toward Galtür and the Silvretta High Alpine Road.
