Isiolo sits just north of the equator, on the edge of the dry country that stretches from the slopes of Mount Kenya toward the Ethiopian border. For generations it has been a meeting point between the highlands and the northern rangelands, and the town still reads that way on a map: a small grid of streets gathered where main roads arrive from several directions, then thinning quickly into open land.
The main highway north toward Marsabit and Moyale runs straight through, and it gives the town its spine. Around it, market lanes, residential plots and mosques fill a modest footprint, while seasonal watercourses cut shallow lines through the surrounding plain. Beyond the last buildings the drawing becomes sparse, which is exactly what makes the centre stand out so clearly in black and white.
