Morón de la Frontera grew on and around a hill crowned by the remains of a castle, and the old town still follows the shape of that hill. From above, narrow streets curl around the slope and climb toward the summit, while later neighbourhoods spread across the gentler ground below. Beyond the town, fields and olive groves roll away across the Andalusian countryside.
The words de la Frontera recall the centuries when the town stood near the frontier between Castile and the Nasrid kingdom of Granada. Morón is also known for traditional lime-making, whose revival UNESCO has listed as a good safeguarding practice, and for the air base on the plain outside town.
