Mürren sits on a sunny terrace high above the Lauterbrunnen valley in the Bernese Oberland. On a map the setting is dramatic. The village spreads along a narrow shelf, and a steep drop falls to the valley floor on one side while the slopes of the Schilthorn rise on the other. No public roads reach it. Visitors arrive by cable car and mountain railway.
Because there are no roads for cars, Mürren's paths and lanes are small and irregular. They wind between chalets along the edge of the terrace. The village has a long place in ski history. The first modern slalom was set here in the 1920s, and the Inferno race still runs from the Schilthorn down towards the valley. The summit restaurant at the top appeared in a James Bond film.
