Ocosingo sits in a broad valley in eastern Chiapas, where the high country around San Cristóbal de las Casas starts to drop toward the lowland forest. From above, the town is a tight cluster of rectangular blocks laid out around a central square. The streets thin out quickly at the edges and give way to farmland, scattered houses and the folds of hills that close the valley on every side.
The road between San Cristóbal and Palenque passes through town, and on a map it shows as a single line winding through the mountains before it straightens across the valley floor. Smaller roads branch off toward villages and ranches, and a few streams cross the surrounding fields. A Ocosingo map poster shows that contrast clearly: an orderly town centre inside a much looser setting of terrain and water.
A short distance east of town lie the ruins of Toniná, a Maya city known for its tall stepped acropolis built into a hillside. Ocosingo is also remembered as one of the towns taken during the Zapatista uprising of January 1994. Today it is a market and administrative centre for a large municipality, and a common starting point for travel toward the Lacandon Jungle.

Wooded ridges close the valley on all sides. On the poster the town takes up a small, dense patch, with open ground running out from it until the land starts to rise.
Highland road
The road linking San Cristóbal and Palenque twists through the mountains, then crosses the valley and runs through town. It is the most distinct line on the map and shows how Ocosingo connects the highlands with the lowlands.
