Oga sits on a peninsula at the western edge of Akita Prefecture, and from above the land looks like a fist pushed out into the Sea of Japan. The coastline makes up most of the drawing. It breaks into coves, capes and rocky stretches on the seaward side, then smooths out where the peninsula joins the mainland. Roads follow that edge closely and leave the forested hills inland mostly empty.
The town is best known for Namahage, a New Year's Eve tradition in which men wearing demon masks and straw capes visit homes to warn off laziness and bad behaviour. The custom is part of how people across Japan picture the peninsula. On a map it matches the landscape: small settlements scattered along the shore, each with its own coastal road and harbour.
