Ostuni is known as la Città Bianca, the White Town, for the limewashed houses of its old centre. From above, that centre forms a compact knot on a hilltop, its lanes twisting, stepping and turning back on themselves inside the outline of the old walls. Newer districts spread down the slopes around it in a more regular pattern, so the historic core is easy to pick out.
At the top of the hill stands the cathedral, completed in the late fifteenth century, with a Gothic-Romanesque facade and a large rose window. Below the town the land falls away toward the Adriatic, a few kilometres off, across a plain of olive trees, some of them centuries old. Roads cross this plain in long, straight runs between farms and masserie.

The cathedral sits near the highest point of the old town. Streets climb toward it from several directions, so the lines of the core loosely converge on it.
Olive plain and coast
Beyond the town, a long plain of olive groves stretches toward the Adriatic. On the map it appears as open ground crossed by straight country roads leading to the shore.
