A river winds through the city toward the sea, and streets spread outward from an older centre in a loose, irregular pattern. The city is the capital of the Bangka Belitung Islands province, created in 2000 when it separated from South Sumatra. Many residents have Chinese ancestry, reflecting generations of miners and traders.
