Rosario de Lerma sits in the Lerma Valley in Argentina's Salta Province, a short distance west of the provincial capital. From above, the town is a tidy grid of square blocks around a central plaza, with farmland on most sides. To the west the flat valley floor breaks up quickly as the land climbs toward the eastern ranges of the Andes.
That sudden edge is what makes the map interesting. Roads and a railway leave town for the Quebrada del Toro, the gorge the line follows toward the high puna and, eventually, Chile. This is the route historically used by the Tren a las Nubes, one of the best-known mountain railways in South America, so travellers often see the town as the threshold to the highlands.
