Salina Cruz sits on the Pacific shore of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, the narrowest stretch of land in southern Mexico. From above, the town reads as a dense grid of blocks pressed between low hills and the sea, with the harbour cut into its southern edge. Long breakwaters reach into the Gulf of Tehuantepec and enclose basins that give the coastline a sharp, engineered outline.
The port has long been the Pacific end of a rail link across the isthmus to the Gulf of Mexico, a route that made the town a transfer point between two oceans. Industry shapes much of the plan. A large oil refinery and its storage terminals spread over the land beside the port, and their geometric tanks and yards contrast with the finer mesh of residential streets.
