San Andrés Itzapa lies in the department of Chimaltenango, in the central highlands of Guatemala, a short distance from the departmental capital. Like many towns founded in the colonial period, it was laid out on a grid around a central plaza and church. On the map, the regular blocks of the centre stand out against the irregular fields and slopes around them.
The town is widely known for its shrine to San Simón, also called Maximón, a folk saint venerated across the highlands. Pilgrims and visitors come to leave offerings, and the shrine is one of the best known of its kind in Guatemala. A map does not mark such places with grand outlines.
