Stralsund lies on the Strelasund, the narrow strait that separates the German mainland from the island of Rügen. Its old town is almost an island in its own right. To the east it faces the sea, and on the landward side it is enclosed by large ponds that were created in the Middle Ages as part of the town's defences. On a map the historic core stands out as a clear, rounded shape, surrounded by water.
Together with Wismar, the old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognised for its brick Gothic churches and merchant houses from the Hanseatic period. The harbour is home to the Ozeaneum, a large marine museum. To the south-east, the long Rügen Bridge and the older causeway cross the strait towards the island, a line that stretches across the water.
