Taliwang is the administrative seat of West Sumbawa Regency, in the Indonesian province of West Nusa Tenggara. From above, the town looks modest and open: a cluster of streets gathered around a few main roads, with houses and government buildings thinning out into farmland. The pattern is typical of a small island capital. The centre is dense, and the edges fade gradually rather than stopping at a hard boundary.
The land around the town is largely flat and agricultural. On a map this shows up as wide blank spaces broken only by narrow lanes and field tracks, and hills rise further inland. The island's western shoreline, facing the Alas Strait and Lombok beyond it, lies a short distance away.
