Tongren Map Poster & Print
Tongren, known in Tibetan as Rebkong, is the seat of Huangnan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in eastern Qinghai. The town lies in the valley of the Longwu River, a tributary of the Yellow River, at around 2,500 metres. Hills hem it in, so it stretches along the valley floor, and on a map it appears as a long ribbon of streets rather than a round city.
Rebkong is famous for Regong arts, a Tibetan Buddhist tradition of painting, sculpture and embroidery practised in villages around the town and recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. Rongwo Monastery, one of the major Gelug monasteries of the region, occupies a large site in the town. Nearby villages such as Wutun are known as centres of thangka painting.
A Tongren map poster reflects all of this in its shape: the river running the length of the valley, the monastery complex among the streets, and the edges where the town meets steep, open slopes. It is a quiet, linear composition that works especially well in portrait formats, where the valley can run from top to bottom.

Rongwo Monastery
The monastery's large complex of halls and courtyards forms a distinctive block within the town, clearly different from the surrounding street pattern.
Valley slopes
Steep hills rise on both sides of the valley, leaving the built-up area as a narrow band and framing it with wide open space.
