Williamsburg lies in north Brooklyn along the East River, directly across the water from Manhattan's Lower East Side. On a map its street grids run in slightly different directions from one section to the next, meeting at angles that reflect the older villages and street plans the neighbourhood grew from. The river forms a long western edge, now lined with parks and new towers where warehouses once stood.
The Williamsburg Bridge, opened in 1903, lands in the southern part of the neighbourhood, where its approaches split the street grid. Just north of it, the restored Domino Sugar Refinery stands on the waterfront, a reminder of the area's industrial past. McCarren Park marks the edge with Greenpoint, and Bedford Avenue runs through the middle of the district.
The Brooklyn-Queens Expressway cuts through the eastern and southern parts, a heavy line through the blocks.
