Meppel lies in the southwest of Drenthe, close to the borders with Overijssel and Friesland, at a point where several waterways meet. For centuries this position made the town a hub for shipping between the northern Netherlands and the rest of the country. On a map, the canals are the key element: they cut through and around the centre, shaping its outline and its main routes.
The historic core is compact, with narrow streets, a church at its heart and quays along the water. Beyond it, the town grows outward in postwar neighbourhoods and business areas, bordered by the flat, carefully divided meadow landscape of this part of the Netherlands. Railway lines and main roads cross the map, confirming Meppel's long role as a junction.
