Monte Carmelo sits on the plateau of the Alto Paranaíba region in western Minas Gerais. The town's grid is fairly regular, with a central square and church, and neighbourhoods extending outward on gently rolling ground. Beyond the last streets the map changes character. Large, geometric farm parcels and centre-pivot fields spread across the cerrado, and thin lines of vegetation mark small streams between them.
The town is known for its ceramics industry, particularly roof tiles, which has earned it a regional reputation. It is also part of the Cerrado Mineiro coffee region, where plantations are laid out in long, straight rows that are visible from above.
