Tlaxcala is the capital of Mexico's smallest state, and on a map it looks modest. The historic centre is a tight grid of blocks around a main square. Streets run out from it into newer neighbourhoods, and a small river runs along the edge of town. Beyond the built-up area the valley floor opens into fields and scattered villages, with the land rising gently toward the surrounding highlands.
The city has an important place in the history of the Spanish conquest. The Tlaxcaltecs allied with Hernán Cortés against the Aztecs, and the Franciscan convent built here in the sixteenth century is among the earliest in the Americas. Its complex still sits on a slope above the centre. In plan, its courtyards and walled grounds form a distinct block beside the regular streets below.
A Tlaxcala map poster shows how small and orderly the old core is compared with the wider valley. The plaza, the convent grounds and the first ring of colonial blocks fit easily inside the frame. Newer streets loosen into curves and cul-de-sacs as they climb the hills. On paper the city looks human in scale, with the grid still clearly visible.

The sixteenth-century Franciscan convent sits on rising ground just above the centre, and its walled precinct is set apart from the ordinary street pattern.

The city lies on a high plateau with farmland around it. The Malinche volcano rises to the east, although it sits outside a tight city frame.
