Ad-Damir is the capital of Sudan's River Nile state. It stands on the east bank of the Nile, a little south of where the Atbara River, the Nile's last major tributary, flows in. The town occupies a narrow strip between the river and the desert, and that setting defines its map: a band of cultivated land along the water, then the built-up area, then open ground.
Much of the town is laid out in fairly regular blocks, and long straight streets make the pattern easy to read from above. Ad-Damir has long been a regional centre and is historically associated with religious learning in the Nile valley.
