Assa lies in the pre-Saharan south of Morocco, in the Guelmim-Oued Noun region. From above, the town reads as a compact cluster of streets pressed against a valley floor. The palm grove curves along the watercourse, and wide open desert surrounds everything else. On a map, this contrast between the dense settlement and the empty land around it is the most striking feature.
The town is known for its old ksar, a fortified earthen village on the slope above the oasis, and for the zaouia and religious gathering tied to it.
