Bochum lies at the heart of the Ruhr area in western Germany, and its map carries the traces of an industrial past: rail lines curving through the city, former industrial sites turned into parks and business districts, and a dense web of streets linking once-separate villages. The A40, known as the Ruhrschnellweg, crosses the city from east to west, while an inner ring road encloses a compact centre.
To the south, the land drops toward the Ruhr River and the Kemnader See, a reservoir lake bordered by woods and paths. The Ruhr University Bochum, built in the 1960s, occupies a large hilltop campus above the valley, and its concrete buildings appear on the map as a bold, regular block.
