Duisburg sits where the Ruhr meets the Rhine, and the map shows the working side of that meeting. Long harbour basins cut into the land like the teeth of a comb, rail sidings follow the water, and wide industrial sites spread along both rivers. Gerardus Mercator, the cartographer whose projection still shapes world maps, spent much of his life here.
