Bryansk stands on the Desna River in western Russia, not far from the borders with Belarus and Ukraine, and its map is unusually fragmented. Instead of a single compact centre, the city is made up of several districts spread along the river valley, separated by ravines, wooded slopes and the wide floodplain of the Desna, and linked by long roads and bridges.
The city was first mentioned in chronicles in 1146, and its historic core sits on the high right bank, where old churches and Pokrovskaya Hill look out over the river.
