Homyel' sits on the right bank of the Sozh, and the river shapes the city's map. The historic centre rises on a high bank above the water, where the Rumyantsev-Paskevich palace and its landscaped park look out across the river to the flat, wooded floodplain on the other side. Homyel' is the second-largest city in Belarus, and it has expanded well beyond the river.
